Our Story So Far
Several of OWL Construction’s senior team members began their building journeys together, before branching out to develop their skills across different areas of the industry. Years later, they reunited to bring their experience and passion together under one roof — and OWL Construction was born. Today, the team brings a broad range of skills and expertise to every project, including (but not limited to):
✓ Smaller and more expansive new builds
✓ High end re-clad/renovation work
✓ Lifestyle blocks
✓ Multi-unit development
✓ Bungalow/villa restoration.
We’ve also delivered a range of smaller projects. From decks and fences to bathroom renovations, all with the same attention to detail and commitment to quality.
When you build with OWL Construction,
you truly build with us.
At OWL Construction, we believe in being hands-on. While we work with a trusted network of expert sub-contractors, you’ll often be dealing directly with our own team throughout the project. That’s because we like to stay close to the job. From site cut and earthworks to foundations and slab prep, through to framing, cladding, final finishes and handover, our presence is felt every step of the way. It’s how we make sure our high standards are consistently met, and how we give every build the care it deserves.

Oliver Walsh,
Founder
Oliver Walsh’s love for building started as young as he can remember, with his parents embarrassing him at his 21st with a montage of him running around naked with a hammer. Having been raised through renovation after renovation, Olivers first project was his parents family home, a 2 year 400m/2 full re-clad+ pool +extension Even now, his own child runs around nappy on screaming “amma” as loud as he can, all while bashing Olivers walls and floor.
Prior to starting his apprenticeship, Oliver had always expressed a keen interest in other aspects of construction, having started an engineering degree. Unfortunately for him, football, the gym, working as a labourer and anything other than study seemed to get in the way of him spending time on what he was meant to be doing…. The study! Fast forward to next year and he was told by his lecturers during his university summer break that he should seek some work experience doing something relevant to the qualification he wanted to pursue, in his case working alongside structural engineers. This aligned perfectly with his parents starting their big renovation. Oliver quickly came to the conclusion that actually doing the work was a lot more enjoyable (and he was better at) than crunching the numbers and trying to tell other people what he wanted done. After working his way through and out of his apprenticeship, he decided he wanted to try commercial construction, navigating his way through the management side of things whilst still being onsite. Unfortunately, what he thought this was and what it was in practise were very different… Thus OWL Construction was born.
OWL Construction is the product of Olivers belief that great quality and great value can go hand in hand. He consistently looks to implement new methods, as well as new products, to deliver high quality projects on time and on budget. Olivers mentor once said to him “time, quality, cost effectiveness, you can only have two” and OWL Construction is Olivers way of challenging that.
Our Team
-
Ian Mills
FOREMAN
Ian brings a wealth of experience to OWL Construction having completed a far different apprenticeship to that of the other team members. Ians eye for detail, along with exceptional use of apps and programs on the building site ensure Ian consistently delivers high quality, accurate work with no mistakes. Builder by day, family man by night, Ians time outside of work is spent with his 4 kids, and when allowed to enjoys running it straight up the middle of the rugby field. -
Trent Rippey
FOREMAN
Trent completed his apprenticeship in the same company as Oliver, about 2 years later. Trent is a former Olympic level sailor, having competed against the likes of Peter Burling and Blair Tuke on the world stage. He brings a winners mentality, a boat builders level of precision, and fantastic organisational skills to the table. This, coupled with his relaxed demeanour, make him an invaluable asset to OWL Construction. -
Ngatokorua Eli
FOUNDATION EXPERT
Toks, or big Rua as hes known on site, is OWL’s foundation expert. Having spent 10+ years on steel construction in Australia, we’re confident to claim he’s the fastest steel-tier on the shore. He brings excellent enthusiasm, high standards and a great vibe to site. We hope to see Toks trade qualified in the next 6 months -
Dylan Oberholzer
The adventurer of the group! When Dylan is not plying his trade on the tools, you can find him down South, hunting fishing and exploring with his mates. Dylans key skills are his excellent communication, professionalism, a can do attitude and great efficiency on site.
-
Denny Twigg
Denny comes from a family of brothers, all having represented NZ on the national stage at futsal. Our most recently qualified builder, Denny is already showing real skill at leading some of the less experienced members on site. Great wit, great speed and great music makes Denny a great guy to have on site
-
Daniel Vito Sausau
Big D, or Dan, depending on what you like, is the muscle of the team. Oliver is already fearful he will be losing Dan to the NZ Warriors in the next couple of years, but while he’s got him he’s going to make use of his awesome strength, his attention to detail and the high level of finishing he brings so early into his career.
